The True Sense of Life

As I was flipping through the tabloid one day, I came across an article concerning conjoined twins. My heart was touched to see the poor babies joined together, sharing heart and liver. Each time I read about these kinds of twins, I can’t help but to think of the late 29-year-old Iranian twins, Laleh and Ladan Bijani. It has been more than a year since the death of these two special people but their courage and determination to live their life at their uppermost has left a deep impact on me.
Despite the warnings and slim chances to survive, they still decided to go through the operation in order to fulfill their last wish – to live and to die as two separate individuals. As expected they didn’t make it even though the team of specialists worked really hard to make their dream possible. However, the doctors did fulfill the second half of the twins’ wish. It was really saddening though. Doctors and medical associations from all over the world fully put the blame on the shoulders of the doctors who performed the fatal surgery. I guess this is human. We keep pointing our fingers at each other not realizing that out of the five fingers, three were pointed directly at ourselves.
Personally I feel the team of doctors who carried out the surgery is real heroes - heroes who are more humanistic. They definitely shouldn’t be blamed for what had happened because they had already explained the consequences and the chances of survival to the twins. And the bright twins understood their conditions and situations well. They have made their decision and they were responsible for it as they had their rights as individuals too like any other normal human being. We have to respect their decision which was clearly understood by the doctors who were willing enough to help them. However, no one can deny what has been fated by the Almighty. They finally died.
These two strong ladies has made me realized how lucky I am to be born without any disability or imperfection in my physical appearance. I am grateful to you O Lord!! Their bravery, courage, their determination and their great confidence has opened my eyes wide enough to “see” the greatness of God. Only in Him we find the strength to do what is right in our life. If these twins can have this kind of strength in them to face this challenging “big stage”, if they can lead their role meaningfully despite their deficiency, then why can’t I? May their souls now rest in peace. Al-Fatihah.
